Announcing Round Two Legacy Grant Awards
The Minnesota Sesquicentennial Grants Review Committee considered 22 Legacy Grant finalist proposals on January 14, 2008. This group of finalist proposals was winnowed from 114 total application submitted for Round Two Legacy Grant funding.
The competition for these funds was substantial. The final proposals represented over $150,000 in requested funds, and yet the Committee could award only $45,000. The following proposals represent the top-scoring proposals:
Nicollet County Historical Society, St. Peter. Treaty of Traverse des Sioux Central Exhibit, $5,000. For renovation and exhibit re-development to interpret the circumstance surrounding the signing of the Treaty.
Cottonwood County Historical Society, Windom. Celebrating Our Cultural Heritage in Cottonwood County, $5,000. For a county-wide arts project resulting in the creation of multi-media products intergenerational fabric arts project; a community-generated sculpture; and an intergenerational history theatre production and curricula.
TRACES Center for History and Culture, St. Paul. Held in the Heartland: German POWs in the Midwest, 1943-46. For creation of one permanent and two traveling exhibits and community dialogues on the experiences and interaction of “captors and captives.”
Evansville Arts Coalition, Evansville and Douglas/Grant/Otter Tail/Pope/Stevens County; and Fon-du-Lac, White Earth, and Lower Sioux Communities. Evansville History Project, $5,000. Fund support re-creation and/or collection of indigenous and traditional structures, stories, and artifacts to augment the Evansville Pioneer Community historic site.
Obsidian Arts, Minneapolis. 150 Years of African American Artists in Minnesota, $5,000. For creation of a visual arts exhibition and digital catalogue focused on the presence and impact of black artists in Minnesota since the time of statehood.
Waseca Arts Council, Waseca. Portrait of Waseca County, 2008, $4,000. For photo documentation and wide display of present-day people, landscapes, and towns comprising Waseca County in 2008.
Minnesota Territorial Pioneers, St Paul (statewide organization), Minnesota Territorial Pioneers Portrait Collection Preservation, $3,000. Funds support creation of ongoing archival work and digitization of the 2000 portraits comprising the collection.
City of Holdingford. Lake Wobegon Trail Covered Bridge and Sesquicentennial Historical Park Project, $3,000. In support of historical and interpretive markers created as part of the larger park development.
Minnesota Public Radio, St. Paul and state-wide. Arrival Stories, $3,000. Funds support a series of radio programs featuring the “arrival stories” of diverse Minnesotans, newcomers and old-timers, and what keeps them in Minnesota.
St. John’s University/College of St. Benedict and Stearns County Museum. The State We’re In: Critical and Creative Approaches to Minnesota History at 150,” $3,000. For support of a public conference and published proceedings exploring contemporary scholarship on Minnesota and setting for an agenda for future research and teaching.
Fort Snelling State Park Association, St. Paul. Minnesota Heritage Songbook and CD Project, $2,000. For support of research and preservation activities for Minnesota’s traditional music and songs.
Virginia Community Foundation. Virginia’s First Mural, $2,000. For support of an inaugural community mural project intended to celebrate the region’s diverse history and culture.
